Pier-2 means the second wharf, is located inside the third shipyard of Kaohsiung port. Constructed in 1973, Pier-2 warehouse originally was the harbor warehouses.
By estimation, it was built by Material Flow Warehouse of Taiwan Sugar Company after opening Penglai Commercial Harbor Zone during intermediate stage of Japanese colonial period.In recent years these warehouses left unused due to the fact that their using functions were vanished.In Double Ten Day in 2000, National celebrations of smoke and fire performance held in Kaohsiung.

When they seeked for the discharge place of smoke and fire, they discovered accidentally these unused warehouses.Hereafter, a group of artists and enthusiastic people in creative production and artistic circles organized “ Pier-2 Artistic Development Association” in May 8, 2001, and started to impel Pier-2 shipyard as a beginning culture place of Love River Area.In the end of December, 2003, Pier-2 Artistic Development Association ended their management over Pier-2. Shu-Te University of Technology continued to take over management until now. Bureau of Cultural Affairs, Kaohsiung City Government rented Pier-2 Arts District as a special characteristic creative production zone that transform this place to become a center of creative production and art.And hope Pier-2 to play the roles as a
Characteristic Creative Production & Art Center of Community, The initial place of local creative production& art resources, Creative production Zone and Relaxing Center of Kaohsiung Port, Culture platform of Creative Industry in southern of Taiwan. And further to promote Pier-2, Kaohsiung, Taiwan as a international artistic harbor city. Therefore, the management team of Shu-Te University of Technology specially invited many enthusiastic outstanding experts to participate together for reconstructing Pier-2 District. By joining administrative units of KaohsiungHarbor, Creative production&Art blue belt union of the third shipyard and LoveRiver, create the new artistic export zone and hope to reach the following goals:
(1) Foreign food and cultural market space
Nice Resturants, coffee shop and the different foreign cultural night-market openings are the present stage of Pier-2 positive work. By different restaurants introduction and union cooperation of teaching and working let students come to practice, and also people could enjoy different kind of pleasure. Combining with artistic education, everyone can enjoy their demand of food and fun.
(2) The Pier area of workshop creation and creative production
At present, major operations of Pier-2 workshops are primarily educational and artistic commodity.In the future, Pier-2 plans to open other creational spaces. let the workshop more expanding, and let more public engineering suppliers come to construct this place.Let this place to become same as Japanese otaru craft harbor, will obtain the outstanding creative products and build up a characteristic artistic space along the Pier area.
(3) The historical building Reused again (Pier-2 workshops of creative production)
"Historical continuing" is the principle of historical construction
space transformation. For example, In Ruhr Industrial District(魯爾工業區),Germany transforming plan, Huge gas tank transformed into soccer play yard.Through light design, Huge gas tank looked like underneath giant flying saucer, the spacel experience was impressed profoundly.In addition, the steel mill transformed into scienstic museum. the shipyard terminal warehouse transformed into market facility, (for example, Japanese Hakodate Chin Shan Warehouse have bar, supermarket, shopping street, otaru canal glass craft hall and dining room, bar), as well as the textile mill transformed the art museum and so on, many successful cases.Pier-2 gradually has created the warehouse space of creative production, art and craft industry experimental platform.
At present, we have steel sculpture, ceramic art, color porcelain painting, tobacco pipe, molding arts, figure creation, metal work creation, paper craft, fiber art, D’ecoupage, wood craft and clay craft and so on 12 workshops. Each workshop has operated by a specialized artist to engage creation and carry on creativity of industry plan.Artistic expert and designer in every workshop as following:

In recent years, government and citizen impel the artistic interaction platform and children mutual learning spaces.Developing and educational curriculum of artistic creativity industry of Pier-2 have provided a complete cultural art knowledge.
By exchange of creativity and absorptive platform, let citizen and children still have a literary garden under commercial environment of city.
(4) Southern Culture Knowledge Economic Platform (free borrowing and reading on different kind of artistic books)
In recent years, the Executive Yuan Cultural Reconstruction Committee have published many kinds of cultural books, have provided a complete knowledge chain. Pier-2 was elected fortunately as cultural knowledge platform, receiving subsidy of different kinds of culture books, to help to establish a rich artistic reading space.
Pier-2 is really impelling the purpose of cultural reading exercise.
